RING-AROUND BEEF PATTIES
1 pound ground beef 1 (2 ounce) can mushroom stems and pieces, undrained Milk (as needed) 3/4 cup soft bread crumbs 2 tablespoons chopped onion 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 egg, beaten 2 large green peppers FOR TOPPING: 2 tablespoons catsup 2 tablespoons grated American cheese
Drain mushrooms, reserving liquid. Add enough milk to mushroom liquid to make 1/2 cup liquid.
Combine ground beef, mushrooms, the 1/2 cup liquid, bread crumbs, onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and egg; set aside.
Remove ends and seeds from green peppers. Cut each into 3 (one-inch thick) rings. Place green pepper rings in a shallow baking pan. Pack meat mixture into pepper rings.
Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees F) for 35 minutes.
Combine catsup and grated cheese and spoon over patties. Continue baking 10 minutes.
